Your feed needs more than education
Here's a conversation I have with almost every new client. They come to me convinced that the only content worth posting is educational. Tips, how-tos, myth-busting. "Teach my audience something," they say, "that's what performs." And I get it. Educational content is valuable, and it's the type everyone tells you to make. But if your entire feed is one long lesson, you're leaving most of your growth on the table.
The "only educational content" myth
Somewhere along the way, "provide value" got flattened into "only teach." So business owners post tip after tip after tip, and then wonder why their audience isn't converting, isn't engaging, and doesn't feel connected to them.
Here's the truth: education is one pillar. Not the whole house. People don't follow you only to be taught. They follow you because they trust you, they relate to you, they're entertained by you, and eventually they're ready to buy from you. Education alone can't do all of that.
The five content pillars
When I build a content strategy, I'm not thinking about a single type of post. I'm balancing five pillars, and education is only one of them.
Branding awareness
Company values, your mission, your why, the story behind the business, the services you offer, and how you compare to competitors. This is the content that tells people who you are and why you exist. It's the foundation everything else sits on.
Especially important for: newer brands, local businesses, and anyone in a crowded market where people need a reason to choose you over the studio down the street.
Education
Frequently asked questions, myths vs. facts, fun facts, and quick tips. Here's the part most people miss: education usually converts the followers you already have. It builds authority and answers the questions people are already asking, but it rarely brings new eyes to your page on its own. It's how you turn a warm follower into a client, not how you find brand new ones.
Especially important for: medical aesthetics, plastic surgery, orthodontics, wellness, and healthcare, where clients research before they book and want to feel informed and safe.
Testimonials
Client results, internal testimonials, and partners or affiliates. This is your social proof, the content that lets other people vouch for you so you don't have to. Nothing builds trust faster than a real story from someone you actually helped, and it gives your audience a real-life example of what working with you looks like.
Especially important for: service-based industries, med spas, and healthcare, where the decision is personal and people want proof before they trust you with their face, their body, or their money.
Entertainment
Quotes, trending posts, casual and unofficial holidays, and internal celebrations like anniversaries or office moments. This is the pillar that actually grows your following. Trending reels, relatable moments, and content that makes you human get pushed out to non-followers, so this is how new people find you in the first place. It keeps people watching and keeps you in the algorithm between the bigger moments.
Especially important for: lifestyle, hospitality, and local businesses that grow through personality, plus any brand that feels like it has plateaued and needs new eyes.
Call to action
Visit our website, contact us, follow us, sign up for the newsletter. Calls to action are great, but you don't want to be pushing and selling something in every single video. People don't want to see that, and it wears them out fast. Sprinkle it in with intention so that when you do ask, it lands, because you've earned it with everything else.
Especially important for: businesses with a booking link, a launch, or a seasonal offer, where the next step needs to be obvious but never pushy.
Why the mix matters
This is the part I really want you to hear, because it's where most strategies quietly fall apart. Education and entertainment are doing two completely different jobs, and you need both.
Education converts the followers you already have. It's speaking to the people who found you, answering their questions and moving them closer to booking. But it doesn't usually get pushed out to new people, so it's not growing your audience. Entertainment is what grows your audience. The trending reels, the human moments, the relatable content, that's what gets served to non-followers and pulls new people onto your page in the first place. If you only do education, you're converting the same small group over and over and never refilling the top of the funnel.
Then testimonials build the trust in between. Especially if you're service based, people want to see real examples of what you've done for someone like them before they'll commit. And your call to action gives them a clear next step, as long as you're not shoving it in their face every single post.
When you balance all five, entertainment brings new people in, education and testimonials earn their trust, branding awareness reminds them who you are, and the call to action turns them into a client. That's the whole point. When you only post educational content, your audience learns from you and then goes and buys from someone they actually feel connected to. You did the teaching, and someone warmer got the sale.
Educational content isn't the goal. It's one tool. The brands that grow are the ones that balance all five pillars with intention, so their audience actually finds them, trusts them, and buys from them.
So the next time you catch yourself thinking educational content is the only thing worth posting, step outside your comfort zone a little. Post one of the other pillars. Show your personality. Build your brand. Let yourself have some fun with it. Think about the commercials you actually remember, they're never the serious ones. They're always the ones that made you feel something.
